Read our FAQ to Learn All About Cosmetic Dentistry
Your teeth and smile are often the first thing people notice about you. Whether at home, at work or out among friends, feeling good about your smile helps you relax and enjoy interacting with people more. Having a bright, healthy smile can improve your sense of well-being and your self-confidence.
It’s easier than ever to regain a lost smile by repairing or replacing damaged or lost teeth with ones that look natural and last a long time. Today’s advanced cosmetic dentistry procedures offer a range of different options for patients to improve their smile and their oral health. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions patients ask us about cosmetic dentistry.
What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is a specialty in dental care that focuses primarily on enhancing the appearance of patients’ teeth and secondarily on improving the patient’s long term oral health. Cosmetic treatments are designed to correct dental problems such as missing, crooked, broken or discolored teeth. These improvements can lead to a more attractive smile and a higher sense of self-esteem and confidence in professional and social interactions. The right cosmetic dental solution can also help prevent the long term health and cosmetic effects of tooth extractions, such as gum disease and receding jaw line.
What are some procedures that are performed in cosmetic dentistry?
Some of the most frequently performed cosmetic dental treatments include teeth whitening, crowns, dental implants, veneers, orthodontics and various others. The goal of cosmetic treatment is to provide a personalized solution to make changes that help you look and feel your best. Your cosmetic dentist will help you weigh your options for achieving the dental enhancements you want to make.
What dental problems can be corrected with cosmetic dentistry?
Many dental issues can be resolved through cosmetic dental treatment. Some of the most common conditions that people use cosmetic dentistry to correct include missing teeth, uneven teeth, chipped or broken teeth, discolored or stained teeth, worn teeth, gaps between teeth, excess gum tissue and other conditions.
What are the health benefits of cosmetic surgery?
Cosmetic dental treatments can provide a number of significant health benefits. One major benefit is a reduction in risk of infection inside the mouth. Eliminating empty spaces by using crowns, dental implants, or bridges can reduce spaces that are otherwise available for harmful bacteria to grow. Removing unhealthy teeth as part of cosmetic treatment also helps improve and maintain oral health.
Can children get cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dental treatment is generally more effective for fully-matured adult teeth and jawbones. Allowing a child’s teeth and mouth to fully grow before beginning cosmetic dental treatment helps ensure that none of the teeth or any prosthetics in use are at risk of shifting and impacting results.
Does my insurance cover cosmetic dentistry?
In some cases, insurance may cover a cosmetic dental procedure. Some cosmetic treatment can offer important health benefits for patients, which dental insurance providers may cover under their policies. Consult your insurance carrier to find out which options are covered. Your cosmetic dentist will provide information on the health benefits to you, if any, of the procedure you are considering. In the case your procedure is not covered or is only partially covered, your dentist may be able to suggest alternative financing to help you obtain the cosmetic treatment you want.
Can cosmetic dentistry correct crowded or crooked teeth?
Invisalign® clear, removable braces can help put teeth back in their proper position and may be used alone, or along with porcelain veneers. Veneers can create a finished look of white, straight, well-spaced teeth. They can allow many patients to bypass lengthy orthodontics treatments and, for that reason, have been sometimes called “instant orthodontics”.
What are dental veneers?
Porcelain veneers are an efficient and effective approach to improving the appearance of your teeth. The treatment involves placing veneers over the fronts and sides of the tooth, or over multiple teeth to cover cracks or chips. It is comparatively convenient to have dental veneers placed in the mouth, and they usually last for many years, if they’re maintained as normal teeth.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants, unlike dentures, are a permanent replacement of your natural teeth. They are placed into your jaw and held firmly in place with a small rod placed where your natural teeth had roots. They look and feel just like normal teeth. They don’t get cavities, but should be cleaned and cared for like regular teeth to prevent gum disease. Dental implants can replace one tooth, a few teeth or all of your teeth. Once they are in place, they will last decades with regular dental care.
Is it painful to get dental implants?
Most patients will experience some soreness and discomfort immediately after dental implant surgery. Minor residual pain may continue the following day. Your dentist will advise pain relief and other simple at-home care following your surgery. Pain from dental implant surgery tends to be less than pain from a tooth extraction.
What are the main benefits of Invisalign® clear braces?
Invisalign® braces are more discreet and comfortable than traditional metal braces, and they’re fully effective for correcting alignment of teeth. Clear aligners allow adult and teen patients to maintain their regular social, professional and academic interactions without being seen with metal braces. The aligners fit snugly, making them virtually invisible and allowing patients to speak normally. They’re also removable, permitting regular daily dental hygiene, which avoids the increased risk of cavities that is associated with wearing metal braces.
Will teeth whitening damage my teeth?
No. Teeth whitening does not damage the teeth. When the bleaching agents, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are applied, they work their way into the porous dental enamel where your tooth stains have settled, creating oxidation and a harmless whitening effect. While temporary sensitivity may occur after a treatment, the process does not weaken or soften the tooth enamel. The results of teeth whitening by your cosmetic dental professional can be amazing.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Professional teeth whitening usually lasts for around two years. To help maintain whitening effects for as long as possible, avoid smoking, drinking coffee or sodas, and frequently eating foods that stain your teeth.
Do over-the-counter teeth whitening products work?
Some over-the-counter teeth-whitening products may accomplish minor whitening results. But, some of the products are excessively abrasive and caused damage to tooth enamel. These products are not appropriate substitutes for professional teeth whitening treatment by a qualified cosmetic dentist.
How much does cosmetic dental treatment cost?
Costs for cosmetic dental treatments vary based on the difficulty and length of the procedure. Treatment can involve fitting and placing dental implants or denture implants, tooth extractions, teeth bleaching, use of bonding materials like porcelain or resin, reshaping gums, or a combination of these and/or other processes and materials to improve appearance. Your dentist will provide you with all of the information you need, to help weigh your options for investing in your smile.
How many dental office visits are necessary for cosmetic dental treatment?
The number of cosmetic dental treatments and follow-up visits varies depending on individual needs and the kind of treatment performed. Sometimes, you can dramatically improve your oral health and appearance in just a couple of visits. Your dentist will discuss your goals for treatment and any concerns you may have, and he or she will work with you to develop the best plan for your schedule and needs.
What will the final result of my cosmetic dental treatment look like?
Sometimes, it’s helpful to see the results other patients have gotten from cosmetic dental procedures, to alleviate any possible concerns you might have. Ask your dentist to show you some examples of results of the cosmetic dental procedure that you’re considering. Specialists in cosmetic dentistry can usually show you 3D models of veneers as well as before-and-after photos of previous patients’ results from various cosmetic dental procedures.
How do I find the best cosmetic dentist?
The best cosmetic dentists have advanced training in their specialty areas which you should be able to find on their website or on their professional dentist page listings. They also have a portfolio of satisfied clients so that you can see the results of their work. You can ask to speak with one or two of their past patients to find out what their experience was like.
