One of the biggest reasons people don’t visit the dentist often is because they are afraid. They fear it’s going to hurt or that something will go wrong, despite modern dental technologies rendering dental work virtually painless and risk-free. Nothing makes a dentist sadder than hearing their patients are too scared to get their teeth cleaned. Lucky for those patients, there are options for a relaxation dentistry procedure.

Relaxation Dentistry Can Help You Conquer Your Fear of the Dentist

Whether it’s for a routine cleaning or major oral surgery, patients should understand that they are in good hands. Although people still put off coming to the dentist due to their past experiences or even their fear of bad news. This shouldn’t be the case.

Relaxation dentistry, or sedation dentistry, is when a dentist administers a sedative or anesthetic to a patient before a dental procedure. The sedative reduces the patient’s anxiety and fear. They are in a euphoric state while the dentist cleans their teeth and gums. When the procedure is over, the sedative leaves the patient’s system.

Are you a candidate for relaxation dentistry procedures?

There are few restrictions when it comes to people’s ability to receive anesthetics and sedatives. You should always ask your dentist if you feel it is completely necessary. Consider the relaxation dentistry procedure if any of the following apply to you:

  • Past traumatic dental experiences
  • High anxiety
  • Embarrassment about teeth
  • Fear of needles
  • Fear of dentists

There could potentially be other reasons we haven’t listed above, but if you feel anxious or afraid of the dentist in any way, don’t be too shy to say something. Your comfort is our priority.

Is it right for you?

Bottom line, getting excellent dental care is right for you. While you should respect your fear and anxiety, these feelings can stop you from doing what’s best for you. This includes maintaining your oral health.

Getting over dentist anxiety can be tricky, but if you give into your fear and stop seeing a dental expert, your oral health will be at risk. It goes without saying that problems increase if you do not maintain proper oral care. What is today a simple dental cleaning can actually spare you from embarrassing and painful gum disease tomorrow. With that being said, relaxation dentistry is right for you if you care about your teeth and want to keep them healthy.

Is relaxation dentistry safe?

The relaxation dentistry procedure is completely safe when a dental professional administers it. Most dental practices offer a variety of anxiety remedies for dental visits. At Balle & Associates, we most often use halcion, an oral sedative.

The dental specialist will prescribe you the halcion before you come in, so you’re ready to get the work done, anxiety free! Halcion typically should be taken an hour before your dental appointment in order for the full effects to kick. This is very important: Make sure you have a ride! Most dentist offices will not let you drive yourself home after an appointment.

The medicine may stay in your system up to seven hours after you take it. The patient will return to normal after that time—with a healthy smile!
